DISAPPOINTMENT has been expressed after the defacement of the Irish language on several bilingual signs in the Aghyaran area.
Speaking this week, local Sinn Féin councillor Caroline Devine condemned those responsible.
The local councillor said, “It’s very sad and disappointing that a number of bilingual signs in our area have been targeted in this way overnight.
“The Irish language is an integral part of the linguistic and cultural heritage of this area. The language threatens no one but enriches us all.
“Aghyaran is a place where everyone lives and works together
“I believe these vandalism attacks to be the actions of a small minority. The defacing of Irish on these local road signs is a show of contempt for the local community and is designed to cause tensions.
“I would appeal to unionist elected representatives in the area to show leadership and condemn these incidents.”
