Humans of an Dream Dearg: Gráinne Ní Ghilín

Stories from those who are behind an Dream Dearg.
Humans of an Dream Dearg: Gráinne Ní Ghilín

My local Council is trying to force the multilingual community of the area to use only one language. They brought in an illegal policy when residents applied to put up signs in Irish in their own street.

English only, they said, thus banning every other language in the world, including Irish. The irony of it when hundreds, if not thousands, of the placenames in everyday use in the area are Irish language names!

The Council was taken to court and forced to withdraw their senseless, discriminatory policy.

People in other Council areas are allowed to put up signs in Irish. Different rules for different areas is unfair.

This is only one example of the many ways in which the authorities try to prevent the use of Irish and hold its speakers back.

We need a strong, standalone, rights based Irish language act without further delay to safeguard our right to use our own language in the public realm. Acht anois! #Rights #Respect #Recognition #RedTodayAndEveryday
